Ashes at Midnight

TGB: So, for the benefit of our members, what is your real name.

A@M: I think a few people already know this, but it is Lia. Pronounced Lee-ah. Because for some reason people think it's pronounced Ly-a. IDK LMAO. Mum got it off this italian ice skater at the winter olympics.

TGB: Seriously?

A@M: Seriously. On both accounts, she was considering 'Heaven' before that rolls eyes

TGB: Is she a VC Andrews fan?

A@M: Um...I think it was more Heaven by Simply Red http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGbREuyYNZM LMAO.

TGB: LOL ok, moving on then....

A@M: Thank the goddess

TGB: How did your pen name come about?

A@M: Well I have always like midnight; it's a beautiful time of night, strange stuff happens. The ashes come from the mythology that some vampires turn to ash in the sunlight. I just thought it was ironic if there was ashes at midnight.

TGB: Anyone that has spoken to you at all should know that you are a Buffy girl... do you remember what first drew you to the Buffy-verse???.

A@M: Not really....it was 1996 and I was 8. But I do remember what kept me hooked, vampires and David Boreanaz. :D.

TGB: David & Angel are definitely worth sticking around for!!

A@M: I got back into this series a couple of years ago after getting all the dvds and watching them again.. And yes, he is :P That's why I’m watching Bones at the moment as well.

TGB: Mmmmm Booth! So tell me, who is responsible for bringing us Ashesatmidnight?? .

A@M: My wifey Silverspoon. :D I didn't expect to get hooked to this, But you peeps are stuck with me now!

TGB: So tell me, what do you do?.

A@M: I am studying graphic design, and working part time..

TGB: That’s pretty cool - i know squat about graphic design so - insert polite conversation here ->.

A@M: Ok well graphic design is a lot of different things. I could choose to do things like web page design, packaging design, advertising....or illustration. Which is what I want to do. Which would be drawing/designing things like posters, cd covers, book covers, picture books, comics...things like that..

TGB: WOW that really does sound cool!

A@M: Getting paid to draw? I cannot see a downside. Of course, it's competitive. But hopefully i am good enough..

TGB: Ummm I've seen your drawings - they are awesome on all sorts of levels!

Drawn for FFA'S True Blood Month, by AshesatMidnight

A@M: Thanks :P I'm in my final year so it's getting hectic!!!.

TGB: perhaps just one more? Tell us something fun;

A@M: I have gone white water rafting. In Austria, that was fun... Went on an 18-day Contiki tour in 08'. I went Started in London, went to Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Austria, Venice, Rome, Florence, Swiss alps, and Paris. :D HECTIC.

TGB: Did you have a hash brownie in Amsterdam?

A@M: LMAO. No, but I will not look at a 'coffee shop' the same way again! We did go to the red light district and watched a 'show' :P that was...a cultural experience. I was in the front row :P.

TGB: I’m not sure that I’d want to imagine that!

A@M: friends and I were gawking, laughing and blushing all at the same time. It was...interesting. Putting it mildly. I really loved Florence and Venice, and Switzerland because I got to see snow for the first time. The first time I saw snow I said "Wow, it's a lot colder than it looks on TV" .

Why I blame Jared Padalecki For Everything, By Silver Spoon.

Why I Blame Jared Padalecki
For Everything
By Silverspoon aka Officer Buffy’s Stake

The FanficAholics Anon community is most definitely alive with the sound of awesomeness on a regular basis. As news begins to leak slowly to us officers of the truly amazing things our members are achieving outside of the fandom, we feel that it is perhaps time that these triumphs were both shared and celebrated among us all. This thinking brings us to our first interview of that nature, with one Pamela Campbell Love; devoted Supernatural fangirl, part-time fanfiction author, and organiser of what promises to be one of this years’ hottest charity auctions.

Just recently, something came to my attention on the wall of another Facebook group that I belong to, which is entitled ‘Supernatural Fanfiction’. SPN is a show that is high on my list of television paramours, and so as I trawled the wall of this group one evening (between maintaining my officerly duties at FFA, of course), a certain post by the aforementioned lady caught my eye. Pamela’s message involved a practical joke that she had organised in friendly ‘revenge’ against one Jared Padalecki, the ridiculously hot and gifted young actor behind the role of Sam Winchester. My interest was immediately peaked and, finding Pamela’s proposition amusing, I decided to lend a hand. All I had to do was pick a random statement, post it on Twitter, and follow it with the phrase #IBlameJaredPadaleckiForEverything. Mass pranking at it’s best, I am sure you will agree!

After roping several other of our members into doing likewise, (and blaming Jared for all number of entertaining things), I joined Pamela’s Facebook page of the same name. Soon, I became aware of the fact that Pamela had started to transform what began as an idle threat and then snowballed into an actual joke, into something that would benefit two very worthy causes. It was at that point that I decided to approach the admin and other officers of our wonderful community with the idea of interviewing Pamela for the blog. Thankfully they agreed, as did Pamela, and so without further adieu, ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you what promises to be one of the most entertaining interviews that any SPN fan is likely to read in their entire life.

1) Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview, I am ridiculously excited to read your answers, and that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I wrote the questions! Would you be able to tell us a little bit about yourself, including how you first discovered Supernatural and what attracted you to the show?

Thanks so much for asking!

Let's see, a little about me... well, I am a Pisces. My birthday is Feb. 24th. Feel free to send gifts. I am an utter and complete dork and the world's worst klutz. Seriously, I can trip while standing still. I am more of a tomboy than a girlie girl. Basically, think Dean with boobs. I am the mother of two amazing kids. My daughter Cailey is 14 and my boy Christopher is 11. I have been singing since I was about 3 1/2. I love reading everything!! And naturally I LOVE SUPERNATURAL!!

What first attracted me to the show was of course Jensen Ackles. I have adored him from afar for ages. But from the first time I saw it, I was drawn in. The storylines are amazing! The relationship between Sam and Dean is so complex yet so raw and simple. Plus, that car... Woo!!

2) From the small amount I know of you already, I see that you attend conventions. What was the first convention that you ever went to, and what were your experiences of it?

Actually, I have only been to one convention. I went to the LA Con this past February. I had such an amazing time. I met some truly exceptional people who will be friends of mine forever. It's a funny story really. I won the tickets on Twitter and went through hell to get there. But thanks to several people, namely Mandy Dillon and Matt Hickey, I made it. It was like a three day summer camp and I was so sad to leave!! I will say this, Trekkies got nothing on SPN fans.

3) Now that the more formal questions are out of the way, I am just going to dive right into the juicy ones that are surely on every readers’ lips! What are the cast of Supernatural really like in the flesh?! (Details on individual members’ butts is totally permitted at my discretion!)

Ahh! The cast are some of the most gracious and welcoming people. They aren't standoffish or conceited at all. They jump right into the middle of the lunacy with the fans. It's great!
Matt Cohen, Kat Boecher, Amy Gumenick, Steven Williams and of course Captain Cuddlepants himself (I gave him that nickname), Richard Speight Jr. made the karaoke party a night to remember.
Everytime I ran into Jim, he was so sweet. Always asking if I was having a good time. Mark gave me advice for my laryngitis. And Misha told me I smelled delicious after he sniffed my hair.
And Jared, well... I will get to him later. But Jensen, so much more dreamy in person. And both of them are sooooo funny! They truly are as close as Sam and Dean.
As far as butts go... everyone’s butts were glorious!!

4) The phrase ‘I Blame Jared Padalecki for Everything’ has fast become a regular one in my household. Please, please tell us how and why this prank first came about?!

Hahaha!! Aahh! Jared, Jared, Jared. That silly, silly boy. *shakes head and smiles fondly*
See, he made the foolish mistake of picking on me at the con. Not just once, but everytime I saw him. It started when I was trying to get pictures of Brian Buckley Band after the concert. I was standing there with my camera over my head, standing on my tiptoes trying to shoot over people's heads. Suddenly I hear a voice in my ear saying "It's not easy being little, is it?" Before I even realized who said it I turned and told the person to shut up. Well, imagine my chagrin when I realized it was Jared! Gen looked at me and said "Oh, he does that to me all the time." He was still laughing so I put my camera in his face and stuck my tongue out at him and snapped what turned out to be a pretty amazing picture.
But it didn't end there, during karaoke, he kept slamming his butt into me from behind the curtain and laughing. It started a bumping war. And finally at the J2 panel, he singled me out during the questions.
Anyway, I came home and vowed revenge. BeforeI knew it #IBlameJaredPadaleckiForEverything was born. It is all part of a year long multiphase prank.

5) What are some of your favourite #IBlameJared Tweets that you have read to date? And more importantly, what do YOU blame Jared for?

Some of my favorites? Oh geez, there are so many good ones!! Here are a couple...

Rachel Briggs -I blame Jared for the fact that I can no longer listen to Lady in Red without clenching my butt cheeks and looking over my shoulder.

Therese Rhundana- I blame Jared Padalecki for actually making me consider that there might be an invisible teenager in the showers at the gym.

Of course all the ones with some type of innuendo are the funniest. And as for me, well, I blame Jared for the fact that I have lost so much sleep putting this thing together. But also for the amazing people I have met through all of this.

6) You then decided to turn the joke into something that would profit two charities that I presume are close to your heart. Can you tell us about your chosen charities’ work, and why you selected them in particular?

A Dog's Life is a canine rescue program that rescues dogs and tries to get them placed with loving families. I am totally a dog person. Always have been. And when I found out that they were a charity that Jared and Gen supported, well, that made it even better. So many dogs are neglected and abused. It is heartbreaking really. They don't have a voice, so it's up to us to be that voice for them.

And we all know that Random Acts is Misha's charity. They do so much all over the world. From small acts to big ones like Hope For Haiti, the good that they do is unbelievable! I encourage everyone to please check out both of these charities and see what you can do to help them out.

7) How exactly will the auction run, and are you able to tease us just a little with what may be on offer to a generous SPN-obsessed bidder?

Ah! The big question!! Well, the auction will work like a silent one. Bidders will email me their bids and I will post hourly updates to show where everything stands. It will be exclusive to the members of the I Blame Jared Padalecki For Everything Facebook page. So make sure you are a member! It will run for seven days. Everything will have a starting reserve price of $50.00 USD. The official kickoff will be on the Season Six Finale night where we will be doing a live webcast.

There will be autographed photos from the SPN cast, autographed items from Jason Manns and Brian Buckley Band, Custom SPN shirts and jewelry, a special SPN prize pack and personal letter from the beautiful and gracious Traci Dinwiddie, and something truly one of a kind from Guy Bee. I don't want to reveal too much of what he is submitting, but I will say that it has to day with the upcoming "Frontierland" episode. I am adding new stuff everyday so make sure to watch the site for updates.

8) I am aware that you have been in contact with a number of the stars of the show through Twitter regarding your auction. Can you describe the overall response of the crew and/or cast you have approached to donate to the auction? How has their willingness to help made you feel?

Oh my Kripke! They have all been so very amazing in their willingness to get involved! They all have jumped on board without hesitation. I am so overwhelmed by their generosity. I even cried while I was discussing things with Sebastian Roche the other day. That is why I am so dedicated to the show and the cast. They are just some of the most truly exceptional individuals in the business.

9) And as I am sure everyone is wondering, to the best of your knowledge, is the man who inspired this fantastic idea aware yet of the wonderful things you are achieving and, if so, how do you think he may claim his revenge for the hysterical Twitter campaign?

Hahaha!! *roars with laughter* As far as I have been told, he is aware of it and thinks it's pretty funny. Although, truth be told, I am a little worried as to whether he will exact his revenge. Guess I will have to wait and see. I say Bring It On Padalecki, Bring It On!! Hahaha!

10) On a more personal note, and aside from your very worthy charitable work, you also write fanfiction. Describe yourself as a writer. Do you draw from any particular influences, which fandoms would you consider writing for in future, and what is your most current project?

I just started writing this past summer. It was a story called "Far From Home". It came from a dream that I had revolving around one key phrase between Bobby and the demon that had possessed his wife Karen. I found it was very cathartic for me. It forced me to draw on emotions that I had buried inside for many years from tragic experiences I had gone through. I think that is what I draw from. My personal experiences. I do find that when the boys kick up a party in my head, it is hars to sleep sometimes until I get it out. It can be quite nerve wracking. Haha!

As far as writing for other fandoms, I'm not opposed to it, it just hasn't happened yet.

I have several favorite stories and authors. Way too many to mention. But some that stand out are "Livin' On The Edge" by Dean's Sassy Seductress and "These Three" by Silverspoon and WelshWitch1011. And no, that is not because you are interviewing me, it is truly an amazing story!!! I am addicted to it!!

My current project is the sequel to "Far From Home" entitled "Comin' Home". It is almost complete and then I will start the final in the series, "Undone".

Now, we enter our ‘quick fire’ round, a selection of questions that Pamela was entirely unaware of until the moment she received them in her inbox! I would like to take this opportunity once again to thank Pamela for answering my questions, and to also urge any SPN fans who may be reading to back her auction all the way!

1) Favourite SPN character?

Other than Sam, Dean, Bobby and Cas? Probably Jo or Rufus. I miss them both terribly. Although Balthazar is up there too.

2) Favourite SPN episode?

Just one? Crap. Umm... Swan Song

3) Saddest SPN episode?

Heart. HANDS DOWN!!

4) Funniest SPN moment?

The Sword and the Stone scene from "Like A Virgin"

5) Best season villain?

Either Lucifer or Crowley

6) Your most watched episode to date?

Either "Heart" or "Dark Side of the Moon"

7) Female character you identify with most?

Jo Harvelle

8) Sam or Dean?

Dean. God, those lips.

9) Favourite romantic pairing?

Madison and Sam. Only because she was the first woman he let himself be vulnerable with after Jess.

10) Most recommended SPN fanfic read?

Oh come on!!! Umm... "Livin' On the Edge" and "These Three"

Remember readers, bid hard and when all else fails, blame Jared!

TGBeib: Tell me about your favourite author.

Muriel: Lordy! That’s a toughie...
There's so much I like... I went through an Isaac Asimov stage... I like LOTR by Tolkein… He did get a bit too absorbed by his own creation though...
I love a lot of classic literature...JK Rowling ...HP series is a modern classic and I believe it will continue to be read for many years to come!

TGBeib: I agree! What is your RL job?

Muriel: Nurse... and Mother...

TGBeib: What is your dream job?

Muriel: Writing... and or editing... (love love LOVE reading other people's work,) do you reckon I could get paid to be a professional reviewer?

True Blood/SVM Month

Sookie Stackhouse and the Southern Vampire Mysteries first appeared in 2001, four years before Stephanie Meyer and her sparkle-pires came to soften the vampire world up. Today Charlaine Harris’ book series has reached ten books and counting, has inspired a hit TV show and given us unending goodness in the forms of smut, fangs, blood, gore, and Eric. The Vampire Viking that makes women around the world go weak at the knees. Eric…Erotic…very close! Coincidence? I think not.

The best thing about the March fandom of the month is that technically – we are getting a two-fer!

True Blood, whilst based on the hit series by Charlaine Harris, does not stick perfectly to the books and can be viewed as a fandom in its own right.

Our own Glee68 tells us below a little about the book series.

This series consists of 10 already published books with the 11th due out in May of this year and another 2 contracted by the publisher.

1. Dead Until Dark (May 2001)
2. Living Dead in Dallas (March 2002)
3. Club Dead (May 2003)
4. Dead to the World (May 2004)
5. Dead as a Doornail (May 2005)
6. Definitely Dead (May 2006)
7. All Together Dead (May 2007)
8. From Dead to Worse (May 2008)
9. Dead and Gone (May 2009)
10. Dead in the Family (May 2010)
11. Dead Reckoning (expected May 2011)

The stories are very easy to read and become quickly compulsive. Whilst being somewhat formulaic (there is a “main mystery and a sub plot” in each novel to solve) it is very heavily character driven and this reader finds herself completely drawn into the relational interactions. They are in essence an “old-style” detective novel, with a mystery that needs solving for each book. Clues are thrown in throughout the story and it is a challenge to the reader to try and figure out the “villain” before Sookie does (or dies trying!). Again, this is all wrapped up and interwoven with Sookie’s growing friendships and romantic liaisons.
The premise of the books is Sookie Stackhouse is a seemingly naïve and simple young southern girl who works as a waitress at her local diner. She has been, in reality, trying to hide her “curse” (she can hear the thoughts of those around her) all her life from the eclectic bunch of townspeople she has grown up with.
She is thrust into a new existence when she encounters her first vampire. Bill, who is actually her “great-grandparent’s” nearest neighbor turned during the civil war, has returned to claim his own property.
Vampires have recently become part of society during the “Big Reveal”. Due to a Japanese discovery of a synthetic blood substitute, vampires no longer needed to hide their existence because they could claim they were no longer a threat to the human population. This revelation has been met with mixed reactions, from people forming a cult-like obsession with them and becoming willing donors (nicknamed fang-bangers) to zealot like persecution.
Sookie soon discovers there is a whole new side to the formally safe and predictable world she thought she lived in. She is thrust into a foreign culture of Vampire politics and rules that she needs to rapidly adjust to and learn to play in, in order to survive.
She also discovers there are more than just Vampires out there to contend with and is confronted with the possibility that all the creatures of her childhood fairy-tales may actually exist in her new world. It is a constant challenge for her throughout the series to navigate through the many new ‘breeds’ of people she encounters and to try and determine who among them she can trust and should ally herself with! She isn’t always successful and she pays a physical price for it on more than one occasion. A fact which is not lost on her.
Excerpt from “Dead to the World”
"You have to have a wish for the New Year. Or a resolution."
Acting on impulse, I shared my wish. "I just hope to not be beaten up," I said, my weariness and the hour combining in an ill-timed burst of honesty. "I don't want to go to the hospital. I don't want to see a doctor."
I didn't want to have to ingest any vampire blood, either, which would cure you in a hurry but
had various side effects. "So my resolution is to stay out of trouble," I said firmly.
Sookie through the course of the books grows and becomes more capable of holding her own amongst her mythological friends and foes. She is fiercely loyal to those she loves and will stop at nothing to protect them.
I really enjoy her character. I enjoy the interaction and realistic highs and lows of her relationships. The mythology of the Sookie-verse Vampires is compelling and believable. They can’t go out in sunlight, their strength increases as they age, they can heal from most wounds, but will die if staked, beheaded or left out in the sun. Silver weakens them and they don’t much care for the taste of garlic. They cry tears of blood, and “die during daylight hours”. Their blood can heal a human and they can feed from humans without “turning them” as they are not venomous. Their fangs are not always visible, but will pop out if the Vampire is sexually aroused, fighting, or feeding.
The blatant sexuality of the main Vampire characters is a seriously big draw of these books. While there are no graphic sex scenes, you are certainly not left with a “fade to gray” and a tall blonde vampire’s “gracious plenty” keeps the girls reading for sure!
I love these books. I enjoy the storylines and honesty of the characters much more than I do the televised series (but Alexander Skarsgard is SO watchable, I’m not complaining too loudly!). I get so caught up in the intrigue and trying to unravel the clues that I am often unable to put them down.
If you have not read them… I highly recommend that you do!

Udo Blick / mephis1, is a SVM fan and has put together a wonderful author review for True Blood Month!

It was happy serendipity that had me stumbling over the existence of the SVM/TB fandom. If it weren’t for a certain 17th century poet, I wouldn’t have known of the existence of fanfiction.

I was in the library hunting down a Robert Herrick poem; all I remembered were the lines “here’s a house of flesh on fire” and nothing else. In desperation, and rather than admit defeat, I decided to give in and Google those lines instead. And lo and behold, I encountered both Herrick’s poem and FarDareisMai2’s House of Flesh on Fire. I remember thinking, “Huh, what is this? A story using Herrick’s poem as the title? Crikey, such boldness.” With curiosity sufficiently piqued, I clicked on the link to FarDareisMai2’s story and as they say, the rest is history.

FarDareisMai2 http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1803005/FarDareisMai2 is one of those unique writers who moves comfortably between fandoms. To date, she has written both SVM and Twilight fanfics. House of Flesh on Fire
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5033210/1/House_Of_Flesh_On_Fire is one of those rare fanfics. It lingers in the memory; it is well-written and has a mature, thoughtful plot-line with well-developed characterisation. It’s simply memorable. And when I’m asked what my favourite top ten SVM fanfics are, this story always makes that list.

Here’s the official summary: This is an AU/AH fic, inspired by some late night ficleting (is that a word?) over at the Sookieverse. Professor Northman teaches English at a distinguished liberal arts college. Sookie Stackhouse is an English major. Yeah, you know it's wrong. Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mysteries - Rated: M - English - Romance - Chapters: 29 - Words: 126,024 - Reviews: 2677 - Updated: 8-11-10 - Published: 5-2-09 - Sookie & Eric - Complete

Readers familiar with the SVM canon will recognise the key characters in House of Flesh on Fire. They are Sookie, Eric, Bill, Felicia, Amelia, Niall and of course, Pam. No SVM story line (whether it’s fanfic or Charlaine Harris’ SVM series) is complete without Pam – she is often the foil in the triangle of Sookie, Eric and Bill.

The story revolves round three principle characters: Bill, the reprehensible villain who has several shady plots up that sleeve of his (and don’t we enjoy disliking him in this story), Eric, the blonde-haired, 6’4” blue-eyed Viking Professor and Sookie, a highly intelligent, liberal-arts college student.

One reason I fell in love with this story; well, actually, there were several reasons but one of them was because FarDareisMai2 has Professor Northman quoting lines from Robert Herrick’s poems. Because, let’s face it, it isn’t often that one encounters a virile, 6’4” Viking who’s au fait with Robert Herrick. Well, I certainly haven’t stumbled across any such male:
“"I saw a Cherry weep, and why? Why wept it? But for shame, because my Julia's lip was by, and did out-red the same. But pretty fondling, let not fall a tear at all for that: which Rubies, Corals, Scarlets, all for tincture, wonder at." Oh no, he didn't! He did not just quote Robert Herrick to me! […]
Cherry – Ripe! Ripe! Ripe! I cry, full and fair ones; come and buy: if so be, you ask me where they do grow? I answer, 'There, where my Julia's lips do smile . . ." He leaned forward and I felt his breath on my mouth. His breath was sweet, and clean, and all I wanted was to taste him. I realized he was preparing to kiss me. I knew he was only playing with me, and that he was probably just teasing me again, but at that moment I didn't care. I simply wanted the kiss, something to relive in my fantasies.
Then someone knocked on the door. I heard him curse in a foreign language. Do they still speak Viking? He strode to the door and yanked it open.”

Did I mention that House of Flesh on Fire is replete with UST? Because, oh my, it is. The tension is simple delicious. FarDareisMai2 builds the UST with an assured touch, worthy of a writer who’s confident in her writing.
“He finally released my gaze, and watched as his fingers trailed down, stopping to play with the lace of my garter, and then ghosting down to the back of my knee. His thumb rubbed circles along the side and then he whispered, "Show me thy feet, show me thy legs, thy thighs, show me those fleshy principalities; show me that hill where smiling love doth sit, having a living fountain under it; show me thy waist: then let me there withal, by the ascension of thy lawn, see all."
Again he was quoting Herrick. I love Herrick. He is the master of seventeenth-century love poetry and, in my opinion, one of the most erotic poets. Amelia thought it was porn, and maybe it was the seventeenth-century equivalent. All I know is that no one else had ever made Herrick sound so wanton, and decadent. Hearing him recite that poem, his voice husky with desire . . . “

House of Flesh on Fire is a veritable page-turner – there are passages of eroticism, beautifully written eloquent dialogue and characterizations that are so well drawn that they come to live on the page. There are several memorable scenes in House of Flesh on Fire. For example, there’s that scene in the library and the mask ball where readers will no doubt be found fanning themselves. And suffice to say, there’s also that scene where Bill gets what’s coming to him.
Without giving away any spoilers, to summarize House of Flesh on Fire in a nutshell: the story revolves round Sookie and Eric and the hurdles they have to overcome in order to be with each other along with learning the true meaning of love. These hurdles involve past hurts and the damage wrought by previous lovers, family and the demons within one’s own mind. Without giving away too much, Bill and Pam play key roles in this plot-driven story. The reader will find herself/himself alternating between gnashing their teeth with certain villainous characters, cheering at their demise and probably identifying with certain plot-lines, which FarDareisMai2 handles with great sensitivity.
I urge you to read this story. It has everything: poetry, friendship, eroticism, eloquent dialogue, loss, pain, romantic love and beautifully drawn characters.

In case you’re wondering about the Robert Herrick poem I was hunting down in the library, it’s ‘The Scar-Fire’ (1891):

THE Scar-Fire.
by Robert Herrick

Water, water I desire,
Here's a house of flesh on fire.
Ope the fountains and the springs,
And come all to bucketing.
What ye cannot quench, pull down.
Spoil a house to save a town;
Better 'tis that one should fall,
Than by one to hazard all.

The other story which I would like to recommend is another FarDareisMai2 SVM fanfic. It’s Chasing the Light http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4928174/1/Chasing_The_Light.

Here’s the official summary: It's five months since he recovered his memories, but Eric has kept Sookie at arm's length. Will being with her put her in danger? Spoilers through book 8. Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mysteries - Rated: M - English - Hurt/Comfort/Romance - Chapters: 34 - Words: 68,401 - Reviews: 1681 - Updated: 8-2-09 - Published: 3-16-09 - Sookie & Eric - Complete

In her Author’s Note, FarDareisMai2 states that “[T]his story takes place post Book 8, so there are spoilers. This story plans on going to a few dark places, so be forewarned. It is rated M for a reason. If that offends your sensibilities, stop reading now. [...]”

One only has to take a look at the list of stories she has written for both the SVM and Twilight fandom to realise that FarDareisMai2 does not shy away from exploring difficult dark themes, themes which most of us writers grapple with when we ask ourselves questions as to how to handle such plot-lines with sensitivity, conviction and credibility. Needless to say, I highly recommend Chasing the Light because this story exemplifies exactly how such themes should be handled. Those who know me will now realise why I enjoy FarDareisMai2’s writings; like a moth to a flame, I’m drawn to the dark stuff and her writings are akin to stumbling across a goldmine.

In case you’re wondering, unlike House of Flesh on Fire, and much like the canon, Eric is a one-thousand-year-old Viking vampire in Chasing the Light while Sookie is a telepath, Unlike the canon, we do get an Eric, drawn in all his complex emotional depths, characterised in shadings that demonstrate a writer in all her wonderful dark artistry. This is an Eric who comes alive on the page, an Eric, for whom you will doubtlessly alternately weep and cheer on:

“I was talking to a city councilman when I felt her. How I did not notice her proximity earlier, I was not sure. I had been feeling her happiness and contentment since I had risen but was, apparently, too occupied to notice that she was here, in New Orleans.
A part of me was angry that de Castro kept me in the dark, but another part was secretly pleased. I would see her finally, and it would not be seen as a weakness because it was de Castro's doing. These months without her had been more difficult than I had anticipated. After recovering my memories, I wanted nothing more than to fly to her and assure her of my love, but I could not. It was too dangerous for her. I was too new in Felipe's regime to risk letting others know how I felt and, I would not let her be their pawn in any moves against me.”

Yes, this is a story which explores the blessing and the curse of the blood-bond; a theme in the SVM canon which often has readers musing aloud in various discussion threads in the SVM fandom. In Chasing the Light, we see the permutations of the blood-bond and what it means for Eric and Sookie. In her response to a reviewer, FarDareisMai2 states:
“It's one thing to have a blood bond, another to have feelings. At Rhodes, Andre wanted to bond Sookie, he had no feelings for her. The bond should cause the human to "heel nicely" but Sookie does not heel. Not all blood bonds involve feelings (as would have been the case with Andre). Feelings are something that can be exploited and Eric knows this well. He wouldn't want to be around Sookie unless he "needed" her for her telepathic talents because, if someone were watching, they would know there was more going on.
I hope that clarifies it.”

The blood-bond between Eric and Sookie does have positive and negative consequences, and in what is a sweet moment of ‘homecoming’ between the two lovers, we also see the storm clouds gather. This is alluded to early on in Chasing the Light:

“We lay there in a tangled heap. The heat of her body, and the magic of her blood, kept me warm and flushed. Her head lay on my chest and her hair, so like mine, splayed out and caressed us both.
There, in that room, in that house, we were the entire world. For that night, the magic born of Hallow's curse was recreated and made pure. Nothing else mattered. Only it did and, soon, very soon, we were going to pay the price.”

What follows is an action packed story-line with several plot-twists. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that it starts with Sookie getting kidnapped. And although Eric doesn’t discover the precise nature and motivation underlying her kidnapping until later on in the story, he does realize that she is in trouble, thanks to the blood-bond:
“I awoke to pain. Only it was not mine, it was hers. That was an hour ago, and there was about another hour and a half until sunset. I growled in frustration, and then bent my attention to the bond between us. She was not close. If I had to venture a guess, I would say she was thousands of miles away. I forced myself out of bed. My age allowed me some movement during daylight hours, and it was easier when it was closer to sunset, but right now I was still sluggish.
Another flash of pain caused me to howl in anger. The thought of what she was enduring, if I was feeling it at this distance, was almost too much to bear. I paced my daytime chamber restlessly, frustrated at my impotence to help her. […]
I sat down and focused once more on the bond. In addition to the pain, there was anger and shock. Good. Use the anger Sookie. If she was angry, she would still fight back, and my bonded was nothing if not a fighter. I tried to send comfort and support through the bond, but I'm not sure how much reached her at this distance or, if she was in any condition to focus on it.”

What happens next is a series of plot-twists that alternate between terrifying, dark and heart-breaking. FarDareisMai2 did warn her readers to approach Chasing the Light with caution. It’s not for the faint-hearted, after all. But again, I find myself saying that in other hands, this story would have stumbled. Not with FarDareisMai2. She handles the themes, the plot and character development with such self-assurance that one can only stand and admire. In her hands, we see love and the blood-bond explored in all its glory and darkness. Handled with sensitivity, we also learn how love can redeem and be a safe haven. I don’t want to give away spoilers, but Chasing the Light also puts into question the concepts of ‘forever’, power and how it has the potential to corrupt and what it means to be a vampire, an Other. I urge you to read this story – you will not regret it. And for those reading this, in case you’re wondering, rest assured, there is a HEA.

And lastly I’d like to introduce one of our newest members Morgaine Swan. Morgaine is an author of SVM fics, most of which are pretty raunchy – you wanna see an Eric Lemon; check out;
Morgaine was kind enough to answer a few questions about True Blood and SVM as well as her fic.

TGB: Morgaine, what inspires you to write fanfiction?

Morgaine: The character of Eric Northman as portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård in the first season of True Blood.
Eric is my ideal man - he's old, he's tough, he's beautiful and he's smart. He's 6'5", blue eyed, and he has long, blonde hair. The long hair is a very big deal for me, so I'm not happy with what they've done to Eric's hair in the show. I read the books after seeing the TV show, so I already had the image of Alex in my head when I read the books. The combination was like a drug, lol. I used to joke that I wasn't married because Duncan MacLeod wasn't real - now Duncan has been kicked to the curb for Eric. There's no way to make him better. People keep asking me when I'm going to write a book, but I can't come up with anything better than a Viking Vampire, and I'm not going to invest my time in a lesser character. I want to write about Eric.

TGB: How do you feel about Bill?

Morgaine: When True Blood first came on, I was totally in love with Bill. Then I read the books, and saw that the show was going to take Bill in the same general direction and I was bummed because I couldn't enjoy the Bill and Sookie scenes anymore. I got over it when I read book 4. Needless to say, I'm very anxious to see what they do with Eric's storyline in Season 4 of True Blood. I've learned to keep my expectations low where the show is concerned, particularly because they've diminished Eric's character so much, but I'm hoping they get this part right. A lot of women are going to be very, very angry if they don't.

TGB: Charlaine Harris has announced that she is nearing the end of the "Sookie Stackhouse series." How do you think / want it to end?

Morgaine: My story, LATE, starts after book 8 and takes a completely different direction. That's where I'd like it to go. I love Charlaine for bringing these characters to us, but I feel a little bit like she's done with them, or afraid of them or something. I was very angry that she let Sookie be tortured in book 9 and I thought book 10 had a great premise of including Alexei Romanoff, but I was very disappointed with the ending. My Eric would have killed Alexei and his Maker, then he would have taken Sookie on the front lawn because there was Faerie blood in the air, relatives be damned. I vehemently disagree with Eric having a male Maker. At some point in LATE I'll do my own take on that, and his Maker will most definitely be female. I really admire Charlaine for accomplishing all she has with the series. I'd love it if she'd license the characters so people could publish derivative works as they did with Star Trek all those years ago. She'd still be earning money, and I could very happily spend many years to come writing about the Life and Times of Eric Northman. A lot can happen in a millenium. I'm nervous about the way Charlaine will end the series. I hope she hasn't fallen out of love with the characters, but Book 9 really left me wondering. On the flip side, I feel guilty about writing about her characters. I know how I feel when someone gets something around my version of the story wrong - I'd lose my mind if a thousand people were using my characters the way we do hers. I don't want to stop writing, but I do feel ambivalent about it.

TGB: Why True Blood?

Morgaine: I have a lifelong fascination with vampires, but I hadn't read any fiction in many, many years when True Blood came on HBO. My approach was always from a Pagan, historical and folkloric direction. I was particularly turned off when Vampires began to be portrayed as ugly, less than human creatures in the 80s and 90s. I feel like we're getting back on track now, though, after True Blood, Underworld, and even the Twilight series, though I've never read it. I want my vampires powerful and beautiful, but not necessarily nice.

TGB: What is your favorite SVM Tb Fic?

This is a horrible answer, but LATE is my favorite. I go back and re-read it all the time. I do love Terri Botta's Let Love In series, but I've stopped reading other people's fic because I find that I get confused about what is canon and what is from someone else's story. I accidentally incorporated something from someone else's work early on in LATE - it might even have been Terri's idea - and I feel so bad about it, I just never want it to happen again. I also like Malanna's work a lot - it's very imaginative, and she's done some things with the characters that are just off the charts creative, like making Eric, Sookie and Bill human 20-somethings and Sookie is actually disabled in a literal sense, in a wheel chair. That blew me away.

LATE is literally the first fan fiction I ever wrote, I just haven't ended it. I think of it as a serial, or a soap opera, that just goes on indefinitely. The time I spend writing is the time I spend in Eric's world, and I enjoy it. When I stop enjoying it, I'll stop writing it, but for now, I like where it's going, especially with the overlap with my other story, Entitlement. It's my version of the characters on a different timeline, but the feel of it is very different from LATE. It's a sweeter, more innocent Eric and Sookie with very little kink. LATE was always intended to be kinky, though I'm a little inhibited about writing the lemony stuff since the problem on FF.net. I wish I could shake it off, but I haven't managed yet.

The Buffy Authors That Slay Us…

By Ashesatmidnight
And
Silverspoon aka Officer Buffy’s Stake

February has been the month of kick-ass vampire slaying action here at FFA and to mark the passing of such a monumental month, the Powers That Be (see what I did there?!) have decided to proverbially grill two of the hottest current Buffy fic authors, and us. You have our sincerest apologies for the latter!

For twenty-eight days exactly we will have enjoyed a back flipping, butt busting Buffy bonanza of pictures, videos, fan art and fics. Now is your opportunity to delve into the admittedly eccentric, definitely unique, and occasionally plain weird psyches of some of our very own group members whose hearts belong to the almighty god that is Whedon.

First, a brief but necessary explanation of some terms you may encounter in the following interviews;

Bangel - a term that describes the union of Buffy and Angel. The fic will generally involve a romantic link between the two or may simply reference a time when they were ‘involved’.

Spuffy - the name given to those fics that explore the relationship between the Slayer and everyone’s favourite blonde male vampire.

Bangelus - probably a given now but a fic that links Buffy and a de-souled Angel, whose less fuzzy counterpart was known as Angelus.

Spawn - a non-canon pairing referring to Spike and Buffy’s little ‘sister’ Dawn. Oh-so-wrong in the eyes of some fans and oh-so-right to others.

Now, sit back, enjoy the banter, and marvel at the ficmasters of the fandom that is Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Interview with the Vampire (Slaying Authors!)

Author Number One

Frosty600 is the author of fifteen fics- an impressive thirteen of which belong to the Buffyverse. The nineteen year-old ficster hails from Australia, and her work is available to peruse (Here)

Frosty600 was interviewed by Silverspoon.

1) Your first challenge... I mean, question... is to tell us about yourself. However, after telling us your penname you then have to give 5 obscure facts about yourself!

My penname is frosty600, and uh, 5 obscure facts about me. Well let’s see. Tigers are my favourite animal. I have a thing for dream-catchers, I love the colour blue, I can’t stand chilli (even a small amount makes me feel as if my tongue is gonna burn off, lol). And I hate turtleneck shirts/ tops/ jumpers of any kind.

2) You are given the opportunity to star in one episode of BTVS. Which character would you play, which episode would you choose, and why?

Um ok this one is a hard one, there’s so many episodes that I love. But I have to go with Bad Eggs and playing Buffy Summers, because well, let’s face it who wouldn’t wanna play doctor to Angel and get some seriously hot Angel kissage through ones bedroom window.

3) What type of Buffy fics do you enjoy writing the most? Do you favour particular characters or themes? And is there anything that you refuse to write?

Well, I tend to enjoy writing romance/angst fics I guess, because adding the angst makes it more lifelike and real and layered like real relationships then just having a completely smooth sailing romance with only the happy joy of love, instead of adding the pain of the hurt that love can also bring. Because let’s face it, no one’s perfect not even in TV shows and I like my characters to be as in character as possible.

Um I probably do favour particular themes even though I don’t mean to, although I wouldn’t really be able to put a name to it, but I’m sure if you read my fics you’ll see a common theme in there even though they’re all different. And I definitely favour Buffy and Angel/us even though I attempt to put in the other characters in the show more now when I’m writing and try and tell what’s going on with them as well, but when I’m writing a story it’s definitely about Buffy and Angel/us mostly because I love them together and they’re the only Buffy pairing I write about lol.

I don’t think I’d refuse to write anything. I’m nothing more than a slave to the whims of my muse, what she wants me to write I write. She doesn’t really give me a choice, she’s a nag lol. The only thing I can think of that I wouldn’t be able to write is a story based on a different pairing. I’m just to in love with Buffy/Angel/us that all my fics are based on them even if they start off with someone else at first it’ll always be those two in the end for me.

4) Which of your own fictions are you most proud of and why?

Well, there’s two really and I can’t choose between them.

1) Artful Manipulations

Because it’s my first completed work with a B/Aus pairing where I’m totally satisfied with the way I’ve written Angelus. And I also believe that it’s a believable plot, that this story could have actually happened in the season 2 timeline instead of what Joss Whedon decided to go with.

2) My Dark Release rewrites

This is a rewrite of the Buffy seasons from season 3 onwards. It is a work in progress as I’m only up to season 4 which adds Angelus into the plotline from Beauty and the Beasts. This is my baby and I put a lot of time and effort into making sure there’s a believable plot and that everything makes sense.

5) BTVS is to crossover with another popular TV show. As a writer, which show would you select and what may your episode contain?

Oh, um well, uh. There’s so many shows that could be crossed over with Buffy, but I would probably say BONES. And have Seeley Booth be the redeemed Angel with no memory of his past as the en-souled vampire. I know it’s been done before in a few fics and all, but it is such a wonderful thing, to have Angel finally reach his redemption and find peace, and of course somehow someway run across Buffy on one of his cases… probably in a graveyard lol.

6) Are there any of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer characters that you feel you identify with and, if so, what are the parallels?

I’d have to say the early Willow Rosenberg. You know the one we first meet in season one. She hasn’t had an easy school life and mine wasn’t all that easy. I can’t say that there were any Cordelia like people at my primary or high school, but there were challenges that I had to overcome that were similar.

7) In your time as a Buffy fanfic author, have there been any storylines that you wished to write but did not for whatever reason?

Oh plenty. Lol, sometimes my muse would come up with story that was just too farfetched and out there that I’d think there’s no way anyone would read this or it’s just too damn stupid so I’d turf the idea. I suppose that’s a good thing though, because with a muse like mine I need some kind of restraint on her or she’d never stop giving me ideas and I’d never get anything finished, I’m having a hard enough time now!

8) Tell us about the fiction that you would class as your most successful fiction to date. How did you come to write it, how many reviews has it earned, and what exactly do you think the readers favour about it?

That would have to be my Dark Release Buffy season rewrites that I mentioned earlier. Season 3 earned 200+ reviews and as new readers find it, it gains a little more. Season 4 isn’t finished yet, but its in the 100’s already with only 5 chapters. I think people like the rewrites because I put a lot of effort into each chapter with the detail and making the added plot of Buffy/Angelus believable, plus lots of people hated the fact that Angel left and so they love reading season rewrites where Angel stays, or in my case Angelus. Which has never been attempted before as far as my knowledge which could be something else the readers enjoy about this particular fanfiction.

9) In light of the new Buffy movie that is to be released at some point in 2011, you are asked by the studio to recast the Scooby gang. Which currently famous actors/actresses/performers would you cast in the roles, and why?

Uh well, in all honesty I wouldn’t be able to do this. I can’t see anyone playing Buffy but Sarah Michelle (Gellar) Prinze, and the same goes for the rest of the main cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actors cast in those roles were just so spot on that I don’t believe that anyone else could fill the TV series cast shoes. So unfortunately I’d have to decline the offer lol.

10) Do you have any teasers for future BTVS fictions that you are planning that you are willing to share with us?!

Actually yes I do. Normally I don’t give out teasers, but I think I’ll make a special exception. This is a small snippet from a new fic that my muse landed me with. It’s for a completely AU season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My muse loves giving me epic plotlines instead of nice simple stories lol. Anyway this is from the first chapter which I hope should be finished soon and up and posted. It is of course another B/Aus fic; my muse seems addicted to those… it’s a bad boy thing lol. Anyway I hope you enjoy the snippet.

Snippet:

The minion only gazed down at her for a second hunger reflected in his amber gaze, before he began lowering himself down his mouth opening wide in anticipation of sinking his fangs into her neck. Buffy raised one of her arms between them, pressing her forearm against the vampires neck in a bid to keep him away from her throat for as long as possible as she tried to think of a way out of this. She could feel his throat working against her arm as he pressed against it trying to get close enough to her neck to sink in his fangs. Buffy looked around the hole they were in and her eyes landed on the shovel that was closest to them its wooden handle catching her attention the most, though the sharp metal spade end would also be handy.

A big thank you to frosty600 for agreeing to take part in this interview.

Author Number Two

Silverspoon has penned seven fan fictions to date, several of which focus on BTVS. The British author is an avid Bangel shipper who likes nothing more than to take risks in her work that may end with her readers hunting her down with flaming pitchforks. Her fanfics can be found here (Here.)

Silverspoon was interviewed by Ashesatmidnight.

1) I'll start off with something easy, no need to be mean! What is your all-time favourite Buffy episode and why?

Argh, you say easy but to a die-hard Buffy fan that is possibly the most difficult question to answer. Maybe that was your intention though…

Anyway, I think that if pushed I may have to say a tie between season two’s Surprise and Innocence episodes. The whole idea of Angel losing his soul before this point had probably never occurred to me and when it happened I remember feeling as shell shocked as an audience member as Buffy herself. The whole idea of the real horror it portrayed too- we’ve all had a first relationship where we gave our all and it ended badly, so to see that play out on screen in such an extreme but intelligent way was amazing (and inconceivably sad).

2) Is there a reason behind your penname Silverspoon? Something funny, something deep... something dirty? Do tell!!

Sadly the story is not that riveting! There is an old Welsh verse, (and I am Welsh), that says ‘to be born Welsh is to be born privileged, not with a silver spoon in your mouth but with music in your blood and poetry in your soul’. I love that verse and it is true of me at least; I love to write and I could not live without music. So I just decided to pick something from it and fashion it into a penname for myself. The words ‘silver spoon’ just leapt out at me.

3) Over the course of seven seasons Buffy had it's fair share of Big Bads. There were the monsters of the week, and then the villains of the season. Who is the best villain on Buffy?

I would have to go back to my first answer to an extent and say that Angelus was the best season villain I think we ever saw. He was twisted, cruel, the epitome of evil, dangerously intelligent, and worst of all- in love with the woman he was trying to destroy. I cannot imagine a worse enemy to face than your soul mate- the person who knows you and all your fears inside out. There were moments when his actions actually made me shudder, and that to me is a sign of a good villain.

4) Your epic Hells Playground is a permanent fixture on my favourites. Could you tell us the story behind it?

Give me a sec to stop grinning like a loon *epic*.

Ok, I’m back! First of all, thank you for the compliment. Now to the actual answer. My reason for writing Hell’s Playground was simple; I loathed the way both Buffy and Angel ended, with so many loose ends that Whedon so obviously never intended to tie up for us unless you plan on reading the comic books, which I categorically do not. To me it was a total copout after the fans had remained loyal for so many years and numerous network changes. I got to thinking one day about what I would have liked to happen in the shows and decided to try my hand at a storyline that made some semblance of sense. Hopefully, I pulled that off.

5) What Buffy character do you find the hardest to write?

I have always found Xander the most difficult character to put dialogue to. I attribute this to the fact that he is actually quite an unpredictable kind of guy. He is capable of being thoughtful, deep, caring and unbelievably brave (on occasion even profound) whilst at the same time managing to be snarky, sour, cruel and clueless. With Xander it’s all about finding the right balance of all of that, and about guessing as best you can as to how the character would react to a particular situation. A lot of authors relegate Xander to being a piece of furniture but really the character is far better than that. He’s great fun to play with (oh God that sounds wrong) but difficult to know beyond a doubt that you have gotten him exactly right. His humour is unique too but I do secretly like trying to inject a little subtle humour into my writing.

6) I really want to know how you got into the Buffy fandom. Of all the T.V. shows and books you could have written about, why did you choose Buffy?

I think that Buffy chose me to be honest. It was the fandom out of all of them that I knew the best at the time (inside out even) and so the story just began to naturally form in my head. I have loved Buffy from the moment the very first episode ended on my TV screen, and I think I will always have a great sentimentality for the show. It’s just the right amount of romance, supernatural, and action, which is something that many shows are lacking in.

7) If you could spend one day with any of the characters in Buffy, and you could do whatever you wanted, who would you spend time with and what would you do? ( and oh... I just realised how dirty that sounded)

Hmmm, does this answer have to be clean? Because if so, nothing springs to mind!

Seriously, I would sign myself up for some Angel time which in itself is pretty self explanatory. And if that was not allowed (pouts at the idea) then I may decide to follow Giles around for an afternoon, drink tea, talk rock music, appreciate literature, and learn some useful Watcher tips from a sexy older man. In short, we would be very very British together.

8) "Oh, listen to Mary Poppins with that nancy-boy accent. You Englishmen are always so... Bloody hell. Sodding, blimey, shagging, knickers, bullocks. Oh, god. I'm English."

Describe yourself in 25 words or less!

A very thoughtful, somewhat obsessive, kind of sarcastic, extremely loving woman whose a full time mummy by day and a massive fanfic whore by night.

9) How would you describe Buffy to someone who has no knowledge of this EPIC fandom?

I would say that Buffy is a show with many layers. Whilst on the surface it may appear to be about feminism, cool clothes, tongue in cheek humour and monsters of all kinds, it’s also a show that explores in great detail the difficulties of just growing up. Everyone can relate to something but every issue was handled with sensitivity and realism (despite the supernatural element). If you like clever dialogue, storylines that are not clichéd, and characters that have their share of flaws, then this is the show for you.

10) Be honest have you ever used a Buffy quote in every-day life? If you have can you tell us about it?

This is a good one. I have a couple of friends who are even bigger Buffy nuts than I am and occasionally we would find ourselves recounting word for word some conversation from the show. Of course this was intentional and purely for our own amusement as well as the confusion of everyone around us. I can’t think that I have ever used a quote without the person I was using it on knowing though. Now I kind of feel that I maybe should…

Thank you to Silverspoon for answering the above questions.

Author Number Three

Ashesatmidnight is an Australian author with ten fics to her name, who has been penning fanfics for just over a year now. Her Fanfiction.net profile can be viewed here (Here)

Ashesatmidnight was interviewed by Silverspoon.

1) "Into each generation, there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer..."

Bearing this in mind, describe yourself in exactly 26 words.

Oh god… did you have to start with such a hard one? Hehe well…

“In the year 1988, a beautiful baby girl was born. With two sisters at her side she battled through life, love and traffic. Without much success. ” Hehe… so dumb!

2) Now I have tortured you suitably, a more serious question. How did you first discover fanfiction, and what drove you to begin to write your own pieces?

Well…. I discovered fanfiction a long, long time ago. Back when I was starting high school so… 2001? Maybe!

I used to read LJ Smith fanfiction on a site called Twilight Tales. She wrote the books for The Vampire Diaries. I never used to write them though… I just used to read.

My first attempt as writing came in ‘06 when I was about 18. I used to write a little Harry Potter fanfiction, and I sucked. I wasn’t really planning on writing anything after that, but then of course that didn’t work! Haha… I started writing Buffy just from a desire to correct some of Joss’s wrongs, and because I had to have some outlet for all my idea’s!

Contrary to most of you it didn’t come from a love of writing or the English language! Writing is just the only way I can get all of these stories out of my head.

3) Is there a story or explanation behind the penname Ashes at midnight? And, did you ever consider any other pennames?

Well… I would have liked to say yes, that it means something deep and meaningful, but alas that’s not exactly true. It’s really quite transparent.

I knew I wanted to have something to do with vampires or Buffy but I didn’t want to use the standard stuff. You know the ‘Buffy4eva’ or ‘ilovebuffy’ and ye gods now I hope no one has those pennames!

I decided to use the word ashes. It’s a beautiful word (and I am still wrapping my head around the fact that a word can be beautiful) and it sounds cool. It also has so many different connotations, and all these life/death overtones.

The word midnight comes from me just liking midnight.

But putting them together ashes at midnight…well it’s a bit ironic isn’t it. A vampire isn’t going to turn to ash at midnight are they? No.

Bit of a pun on my part, not a particularly good one… but there you go.

4) Let's focus on Buffy! Can you describe your personal journey with the show? Who introduced you to BTVS? What exactly draws you to the show and the characters? And do you feel that the show has had any particular impact on you as a person, or your life?

Hahaha… well considering I have been meaning to write this in my profile I am so glad you asked me this question! But I warn you, the answer is long and tedious.

I was first introduced to Buffy at its pilot. Yep I watched it on T.V on its original run, and…wait for it… I was 8. A part of me wonders what on earth my mum was thinking letting me watch it! Lol, no wonder I turned out so strange.

I absolutely loved it, and watched the first three seasons on the T.V back in the day. But I don’t really remember all that much from it. The only scenes I remembered was the one where Buffy and Angel first kiss in Season 1’s ‘Angel’ and the overweight demon ‘in desperate need of a Stairmaster’ that we see in Season 3’s ‘Bad Girls’ everything else got lost in the deep, disturbing recesses of my brain. It’s funny what your brain remembers.

Anyway… I never watched season 4-7 on Buffy’s first run. My 10 yr old self was seriously pissed that Angel walked away. I never understood why they couldn’t ‘just work things out’ lol’s of course NOW I get it, but I still don’t understand it!

Fast forward to late 2008 and I was wandering aimlessly around the DVD store one night, in serious need for some sword and sandals epic, when I happened to stumble across the first disk of the first season of Buffy.

Oh a whim (yes, it was indeed a WHIM that re-started this obsession!) I got it out, went home and watched the first three episodes in quick succession.

The obsession was back with a vengeance! Oh boy!

The next day my mum went out and bought me the entire series, all seven seasons of Buffy as an early Christmas present. (Have I mentioned how much I love my mum!!) after I finished watching Buffy I went out and brought Angel: The Series, and the obsession continued!

I started reading Buffy and Angel fanfiction not long after I finished watching both series. This was early on in 2009, I posted my first Buffy fanfiction in August of ‘09.

I suppose what draws me to the show is the great characters, the strong female ass-kicking lead and the supernatural element. The vampires are one of my favourite aspects of the show. I have always liked the vampire mythology, and loved how Joss made his vampires demons with a second face. I loved the humour that is used in the show, and how Joss used the supernatural as metaphors for other aspects of life.

I just think it is a brilliant, well put together and acted show that is seriously underrated by the general public. It has some of the best quotes I have heard, some of the funniest characters, some of the evilest characters and the best female heroine in TV.

It truly did shape how I view life, and as Buffy would say “Seize the day, because tomorrow you might be dead”

5) For a fanfic virgin, that all important first fic is a milestone. Let's hear about yours! What was the very first fic you wrote, and reading back over it now, how do you feel about it?

My very first fic was a very, very bad Harry Potter fic. I knew it was bad when I wrote it and I cringe just thinking about it! Let alone reading it!

My first Buffy fic is another matter. I love it, and am quite proud of it. It really shows how much a couple of years and a bit of writing experience can give you when writing any type of fic.

6) You are allowed a day to swap bodies with one character in BTVS (presuming they are real of course). Which character would you choose, and what would you do with your stolen day?

Hahaha… OMG I wrote a fic about this! Buffy/Angel of course and well… I’m sure you can guess what happened! Hello sexy goodness!! Ummm….

Anyways, back on track…. this is a really tough one. I think if I could I would swap bodies with Buffy.

With Buffy I could spend a day as a blonde (never done that before) and someone who is short (again never done that before) I could experiment with different hair do’s. And come on! I would absolutely love to be a Slayer for a day!! Kicking vampire butt, and of course smooches with Angel!!! Hehe… yep. Buffy for the day! Look out people a Slayer is on the loose!

7) Tell us about your favourite Buffy fic that you have written. Oh, and be a sweetie and tell us about it in rhyming verse... (no, I'm really not kidding)!

What? You’re kidding right? YOU ARE SO EVIL!!

It’s Always You
Is just a little bit blue

A spell and a lost memory
It’s got one hell of a funny!

With angst and woe
It really touches you so.

A bit of smut here and there
It’s really something I want to share.

So take a look and see for yourself
Is it even worth this rhyming verse?

Pass/fail?

8) If you could have changed one thing about Buffy The Vampire Slayer, however big or small, what would that be?

Um… hands down Angel leaving at the end of season three. Despite the awesomeness that was Angel: The series. I still wish he and Buffy could have stayed together and worked things out. Yeah… my 10 year old self is hard to shake, romantic brat!

9) What words of advice would you give an author who is thinking of branching out specifically into writing Buffy fanfiction? Is there anything in particular that you find readers like or dislike, and are there any clichéd story lines to stay away from?

I don’t think I am the best person to ask for advice because I tend to get really quite strange ideas for stories. I have noticed that a lot of the people in the fandom are very specifically pro Buffy/Angel or Buffy/Spike, and they are all very opinionated in just which vampire is ‘the right choice’ for Buffy. Hardly anyone is equally a B/A or a B/S fan!

The other characters and pairing are not as readily written or read as the above pairings.

For cliché’s I see a lot of All Human fics, where the characters of the Buffyverse are put into human situations without any of the supernatural aspects. For me personally I don’t understand the appeal of these fics, because for me the entire supernatural aspect is the best part about Buffy.

This isn’t exactly a bad cliché’ though, a lot of people read them and a lot of people write them. I am continually finding I have to scroll through the archive looking for fics that are not All Human.

Cliché’s to stay away from, which I have seen pop up a few times recently ( and really get my goat because I see them all the time) is the role reversal fics; the ‘insert awesome OC’ storylines where an OC magically comes into the Buffyverse and saves the day, although I love OC’s that play a minor role in the storyline; and the always present ‘Spike is Buffy’s first love’ fics. Don’t even get me started on them!

10) You are invited by the Kuzuis (who now hold the rights to BTVS) to be the main writer on the new Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie. Explain to us briefly what your story would be about, and whether or not you would choose to stick with the original BTVS characters.

Grrr….just…ugh!

First of all, this would not be a story about Buffy and the Scoobys. As much as I love Buffy and the rest of the gang I don’t believe it is right to reprise our blonde Slayer. Her story is being continued in the comics, and no actress will ever be able to play Buffy as well as SMG did.

So my story, funded by the Kuzuis (though they have no input into my idea) would focus on a young, newly awakened Slayer. She would not be American, sorry Australian pride is much too strong for me to shake!

She would live in Melbourne, a large city with a large vampire population and the movie would focus on her and her Watcher getting her through her first year as a Slayer. She will be visited by Faith (as a way to keep the old fan’s happy since Eliza isn’t too old to still play Faith!)

Of course there will be a big bad, possibly a hot love interest with a dark shady past who may or may not be evil. The right amount of pop-culture references and some hip trendy alternative songs.

Thank you to ashesatmidnight for taking the time to complete this interview.

Author Number Four

Constant Comment Tea is the American author of seven fictions, which span the Buffy, Angel and Harry Potter fandoms. A well travelled, educated, and spiritual person, Constant Comment Tea has been an active member of FFN for six years. Her work can be found (Here.)

Constant Comment Tea was interviewed by Ashesatmidnight.

1) Constant Comment Tea is quite an unusual penname, how did you come up with it?

When I first signed up for ff.net, I was going through a phase where tea was my favourite drink; it’s delicious, healing, and it comes in so many different flavours. I decided that choosing a certain kind of tea would be a nice penname because tea helped me through so many writing spells and I probably wouldn’t get tired of it after a while (like some of my embarrassing tween aliases which shall remain unnamed). As I recall, I considered “Lady Grey Tea,” but in the end went for Constant Comment because of the insinuation that I always comment on stories (when I can think of something substantial to say), and in the hope that people will “constantly comment” on my own works.

2) You are one of the few authors I know who doesn't like to post a story until she is completely finished. I admire that, I wouldn't have the patience!

Why did you decide that this was best for you? Is it something that just happened or did you make a conscious decision to not post until you were finished?

Writing to me is a very personal thing. Like a piece of art or a song, I express myself when I put words to paper. I therefore take comments on my work personally, and I care very much about what other people think about my stories (particularly strangers—I’m okay showing my not-so-great pieces to people I’m close with, as my beta Babblefest will attest to), so I won’t post something I’m not proud of. That necessarily means that I won’t post it until it’s done.

In order to write something I’m proud of, I put it through all the rigors of the writing process, which means cutting and rewriting countless times until I am sure that the plot is sound and compelling, that my characters are believable and forward-moving, and that I’ve hit all the emotional points I want/need to. I won’t know if I have achieved all of this until it’s done (or nearly done).

I know that it’s impossible to write stories that everyone will like, but I still feel like it’s my duty to the readers and other writers out there to try.

3) How were you first introduced to the show Buffy The Vampire Slayer?

Babblefest, my beta—and more importantly, one of my best friends since high school—made me watch Angel back in 2004-ish. I was a little sceptical about it when she told me it was a spin-off of Buffy (yes, I was one of those people who heard the title and went, “…Seriously??”), but it grabbed me. It was a new calibre of show that was exciting to see; clearly high-quality storytelling that I had never come across on TV before. After a few seasons of Angel, we decided to watch Buffy together to get the back story. It took much longer for me to warm up to Buffy (prejudice can be hard to get past—and the cheesy music and effects in the first two seasons didn’t help), but I eventually fell completely in love with BTVS, too.

4) What I found enjoyable about this show was the emotions I felt while watching it. But was there ever a time when you hated how an episode made you feel?

If an episode or a series evokes a strong emotion in me, even if it’s negative or depressing, a part of me will love it. Getting a strong emotional rise out of people is hard, and I have the utmost respect for anyone able to do that effectively, no matter how uncomfortable it feels (in fact, discomfort implies bravery on the writer’s part, which I also greatly respect).

However, when I first watched the shows, there were some plotlines and changes that didn’t sit well with me (Cordy and Conner in Angel season 4, for instance, and I still don’t really like Buffy season 4), so that was disappointing.

5) Can you tell us the story behind your Angel-centric story 'The Art of Human Interaction'? It is a brilliant piece of fanfiction that never fails to make smile. I would love to know how it first came about.

“The Art of Human Interaction” came from a dream. In my dream, it was the future, and Angel had started to find friends and let himself love people again, after all the pain and hurt he’d gone through in the show. Just as he’s starting to get comfortable with this new group of people, Cordy shows up and throws his whole world out of whack. When I woke up, I knew I had to turn this into a real story.

As I sat down to plan the story, it quickly became clear to me that I needed to write a prequel exploring who these new characters are and how/why Angel became friends with them. It was supposed to be short, but the characters took on their own life and ran away with it. Judith, William’s mother, popped her head in completely unexpectedly and demanded to know what I was doing with her 9-year-old son, so I gave her a few chapters to find out and react. She is now my favourite character. Calder also had a story he wanted to tell, so I gave him a few chapters. And then it took Angel several years to start to admit that he liked these new people, so it all ballooned into this 12-chapter piece.

I also wrote a kind of mini-sequel exploring Angel and Judith’s relationship (not in a shippy way), called “The Art of Vampire Interaction,” and that’s posted as well. The original story based on my dream is in active progress, and I have a library of short stories and one-shots of interactions between all these characters—the better ones of which may be published at some point.

I am in complete wonder and gratitude for how much a simple dream has given me.

6) Could you tell us about how you first discovered fanfiction and what drove you to start writing in the first place?

I’ve always had a very active and vivid imagination. When I was little, writing was a creative outlet, and I was always writing stories about the people and places in my head. Because I liked to read, fan fiction was a natural step.

I think my first fan fiction was about Singing Bird, Kirsten’s friend from the American Girl series, when I was about nine. My first chapter story was for Harry Potter, right after GoF came out, and I abandoned it when OotP was released. Though the plot was lacking, I got terrific writing experience with it, and looking back I’m rather impressed with a lot of the non-plot-related elements I managed to pull off.

7) What is your favourite season of Buffy and why?

Season 3, by far. The Mayor was my favourite villain. He’s so quintessentially Joss, in how multi-faceted and human he is, but with a weird juxtaposed pure evil-ness that is both hilarious and scary. I loved the Mayor so much more than I ever expected to love a villain.

Also, season 3 has the most stand-alone episodes of any season that are fantastic. I can pop any disc in and go, “Oh, yeah, that episode is really good; we should watch that one.” The rest of the really good ones are kind of involved, and more spread out across the seasons.

8) What character do you think changed the most during the run of the show? ( You can include characters who moved to Angel if you want.)

A good case could be made for so many of them. If we’re including characters that moved over to Angel, then either Cordy or Wesley would definitely top the list, since they had a lot of time and space for the writers to make them grow.

But if we’re just sticking with Buffy, then I guess I would have to say Willow. The most innocent of all of them when the show started, by the end she was the farthest from it. Also, changing (or realizing) sexual orientation is huge, and the bravery she held around that in season 4 was definitely not something she had in season 1. Even by that point, I think she surpassed the rest of the characters in terms of changing, and that was only halfway through the series.

9) If you were stranded on a desert island which Buffyverse character would you most like to be stranded with and why?

Off the top of my head: Giles. I think he and I are a lot a like in our calm, collected way of viewing the world, and I would feel like we had a shot of getting off the island working together with him. Also, he’s super-sexy.

10) Could you tell us a little about the project you are currently working on? What is it about, what characters are in it and why you wanted to write this story?

I am working on a long chapter-fic called “The Heart of Human Interaction,” the third in my Interaction series. Now that Angel has figured out how to love people again, he, and the rest of the characters, get to remember all the pain and joy—the heart—that comes with it.

Because Cordy shows up unexpectedly (see question 5 above about the dream), she and Angel are working through a lot of turmoil about their relationship; what they mean to each other now, hundreds of years later, and how their opposing beliefs and priorities affect their friendship. It’s not at all helped by the stress of the situation where they have to find the missing boys (see below), and there’s a lot of strain between them, contrasted with an intense gratitude for finding each other after such a long time. Oh, and some revelatory information about Connor doesn’t help, either.

It’s a coming of age story for William—now 16 and starting to realize that his parents and Angel are flawed (his world crashes a bit). He and Calder are flung into the past and have some painful interactions with the Angel of that time, forcing them to make some realizations about how they view the adults in their lives.

And Judith is dealing with her deep-set loss issues, catalyzed by the fact that her beloved son suddenly goes missing. She has a few break-downs, too.

So there’s a lot of emotion in this piece, and it’s a lot more character-driven than action-driven, which is my favourite kind of piece to write. Originally, I wanted to write this story because I’m an A/C shipper, and I love any sexual tension between them. Now, I want to write it because I love my characters and I love their relationship with Angel. They bring out a side to him that no one in the show ever really has, and it’s a fascinating avenue to explore for him.

Thank you to Constant Comment Tea for agreeing to take part in this interview.
