Guest Reviewer ~ reader_giggles

FAGE continues once again. This time we have two fantastic rec's by guest reviewer, Reader Giggles.

I'm not proud, but I'll be honest and tell you that I haven't read all of the FAGE entries, in fact I'm using these guest reviews as a great excuse to 'take time out' from RL in order to study what I am posting. I didn't get to take the time for the first post and I'm truly regretting that. I plan to go back and read the first two rec's, and maybe add my two bob to the blog piece.

I'm absolutely ASTOUNDED at the talent in this group. Seriously, I understand that there are some truly talented people in this group, but the level in which you guys can take a couple of words and spin them into a heart wrenching, hilarious, beautiful and/or lyrical story, has completely floored me! I am one proud creator and I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for joining this group, and playing the biggest part of all in making it a great place to call home.

So without further a do we start this review with an interview from the ever beautiful and currently recovering (not from her FF addiction, don't stress that will never be cured) author Claire Bloom.

Why a story about spirits?

The Soul Collector was originally about a demon who kidnapped people and stole their souls. But as I was writing it I couldn't make it flow so I stopped and started a new FAGE which was AH and had a clumsy Bella dating Emmett before falling for Edward. He likes her too but judges her as a tart because she has a lot of male friends. I didn't like this one either so started re-writing The Soul Collector. I was still not happy, so asked Tiff for my FAGE beta early, so I could gauge some reaction or advice. Cate was very kind and helpful but once again I got stuck. So, in a moment of madness, I changed direction and it became ghosts which flowed better, and finally I was happy with it.

How long did it take you to write the story?

I started writing it when Tiff first sent out the prompts in March/April. I finished it 4 days before the posting date, 21st May.

I cried while reading it, a lot. You truly bring the characters to life and tug on our heartstrings. Did you cry while writing it?

I sobbed my friggin heart out! Especially the part when Bella is sitting on the ground mourning him, thinking of this little boy trapped in limbo, his spirit unable to move on. I had to stop because I couldn't see the screen! And then again in ch9 when his father brings his remains to the surface. There is a reason that chapter is so short.

How do you think FAGE has helped FFA and would you enter it again?

I think FAGE was an incredible idea. People who don't usually write have taken a chance and produced some very endearing stories. People have stepped out of their zones and tried new routes, first time lemons and even humour. I'm so impressed with them all. I think FAGE allows people to try new things and can give the authors some publicity. There is quite an interest in a FAGE repeat, with even more new authors wanting to take part. I think if we did it again, the amount of participants would be bigger this time round. I would definatley enter itagain.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any new stories on the horizon?

I'm still working on an Edward's POV for Spellbound. He is so dark and tortured, it's quite a challenge to do him justice, especially in this story. I won't be doing all chapters, just the significant ones.

I also have a few more novella's in the works. A love story between Edward as a vamp and Bella as the old lady she dreaded becoming.

I also have a multi chapter fic, which again, is bordering on the supernatural. It features Bella being able to experience reality through the power of her dreams. I tend to find writing supernatural more easy than all human. I have no idea why. Lol.

Thank you Claire Bloom,

Ferla V

Title: The Soul Collector

Summary/Prompt used: Outside

As you read the prologue there’s a sense of foreboding and heartache to come. The writer grabs at your heartstrings from the very start and I’m here by issuing a tissue alert people, I suggest strongly that you adhere to it!

Progressing through it you’ll realize Bella has something not many others do; a sense of compassion and kindness which makes her ‘special’. Bella struggles to accept that she’s special, mostly because of her mothers inability to deal with a child who sees and talks to 'imaginary friends'.

'I would play with my dolls and have tea parties and chat to my imaginary friends, just like all the other little girls my age. But when it was time for bed and my friends were still there with me, my mother would become frustrated with me, and worse, sometimes she even looked scared.'

It’s a story of one woman’s looking for a man she’s seen only in her dreams. She sees him in the middle of a clearing, hunched over, desolate and hurting. One aches to understand what he means when he whispers “My life”, before disappearing into thin air. It’s one woman’s desperate search to see this man at peace.

'I knew that as long as I believed he was still here, I would always come back to this place. For Edward, I would always come back.'

What really gets to you is the tragedy behind it all; it’s senseless. Nobody is to be blamed but it makes you want to yell and scream at the injustice of it all. You see the affect it has on the family that’s left behind, left to wonder exactly what happened that day and to live in hope that the one they lost will come back to them. What this story has taught me, is that we owe it to ourselves, and to others, to be kind, to see hope where others would see despair. When you get to the very last line of this beautiful, heartbreaking story you realize that the title is so very apt.

The author also very cleverly places a small piece of my favorite Alice! Very skillfully done, indeed! She gets brownie points for it…lol

Now go … read … review.

Guest Reviewer ~ Celesticbliss

So the FAGE reviews continue. This time 'round Celesticbliss takes time out to review one of my favorite authors, AcrossTheSkyInStars, and her story of a middle aged woman finding her future when she visits her past. This story has the perfect ending that will have you begging for more!

I got a chance to interview the author and here's what she had to say:

    1. Why an Alice story?

I wrote an Alice story because I wanted to do something different. My recipient requested either an E/B or an A/J pairing. I've written E/B stories up until now and I figured I would take some liberties with my FAGE. I wanted it to be something new for me and it was honestly a lot of fun writing Alice, especially as an older woman.

    2. Did the storyline come to you right away, after you'd chosen your prompt?

The idea didn't come right away. It took some time for me to work things out in my head. I wasn't sure what pairing I was going to do at first or what type of narration. I was toying with doing third person, but I decided to stick with Alice's POV. Once I had gotten those details worked out, I started creating Alice's character and the people in her life. It was easy once I actually began writing.

    3. If FAGE, or something similar, were to happen again would you enter again?

I would DEFINITELY enter a FAGE again. It was so much fun and I would totally do another one. I think we should have a bi-annual FAGE. One around this time and one for Christmas!

    4. How do you think FAGE has helped FFA become a better place?

I think FAGE has helped us a lot to communicate with authors we may not have talked to before. While we all chat and comment on the same things, we interacted more by writing stories for authors that we weren't particularly familiar with. I didn't use a FAGE beta, but I think working with different betas also helped people communicate with each other more. It's brought us closer :)

    5. You seem to have a few requests to continue your story, is it something you plan to do?

GAH! Maybe. I like where I ended it for the time being, but I was thinking of extending it to 10 chapters, but not before I finish The Hunt. I want to give my other story my full attention before I start writing another one. I get too distracted when I do more than one.

Thank you very much for your time and thanks for another great story!

Thanks for the questions and the review!

Summary/Prompt used: couple tries to avoid their old flames at their 20th high school reunion

This story starts out with an immediate element of mystery and surprise. Alice seems to have a lot of stereotypical Bella characteristics so I had to keep checking the POV to make sure I knew who I was reading. It was a nice change from the norm. As awkward as Alice was, she still stood strong in her Jimmy Choos. Goes to show that Alice’s fashion sense never wavers from fic to fic. Alice is single and trying to wrap her mind around attending a 20 year high school reunion because of a certain someone who will be attending. This also pointed out that we weren’t reading about a young frivolous Alice. This was a 37 year old every day girl that so many women can actually relate to. With a bittersweet SINGLE written on her form, she decides to go. I assumed immediately it was Jasper she was nervous to see so I read on anxious to know the past of these two.

The next chapter revealed the mystery man that Alice wasn’t looking forward to facing and let’s just say it wasn’t who I was expecting! The fic didn’t drag through awkward hellos and backstories at the reunion but Alice’s nerves didn’t let down until she had a few martini’s down. With a familiar face tending the bar and an unexpected guest saying hello, this just doesn’t stop surprising me!
If you’re looking for a pointless, smut filled fic that doesn’t have a very solid storyline then move on.

Not that there’s anything wrong with pointless smut.

Champagne SuperNova tells a story about a middle aged woman facing twenty year old demons and managing to find herself along the way. They say highschool is the most awkward time of a girl’s life but maybe it takes visiting the source years later to find your confidence.
After four chapters I was itching for more, yet I was satisfied knowing that things were headed in the right direction. The story did not wrap itself up in a pretty pink bow, instead it ended with a very realistic visual, something that will give every down-on-herself girl that warm and fuzzy that shows everything can be ok.

FAGE! I don't know about you but, during the weeks and days leading up to FAGE, whenever I saw someone mention it I got so excited sometimes, I'd wee a little. Thank goodness for Depends, they really saved the laundry.

As creator of such an amazing group, it warms my heart to see how much effort the givers, the receivers, the readers and especially the event leader, Officer Spread'em, put in to make it such a raging success. A show of hands who thinks this is one of the best ideas ever?

*raises hand*

So, I thought that since FAGE is for the people, by the people, why not give the people a chance to show their appreciation for the great stories that have been created. This week we'll see a whole series of reviews as members of the group talk about their fave entries.

Sit back, grab your fave Edward/Jasper/Emmett/Carlisle/Jacob/Charlie (if ya into that) cup, fill it with our complimentary tea, dip our complimentary Cullen shaped biscuits and enjoy the Cullen-ary delight that is FAGE.

Within this past week many of you know FAGE has finally been gifted to us. I was lucky enough to be able to Beta for two great fics with some creative prompts. Both did an awesome job and you should check them out, in fact you should have already read all these fics. Our wonderful creator asked for help in reviewing and rec’ing some fics and I offered my assistance. The two fics I picked were CullenLovingMom’s It Takes a Village and Jacky-Cullen’s So Far Away.

I didn’t just pick CLM’s fic just because she’s my friend, but because it stood out, it hit something deep within my heart and I think everyone should give it a read.

Title: It Takes a Village

Written for: Kyndall/Celesticbliss

Summary/Prompt used: Our favorite vampire family plays foster family to several human children.

CLM took this prompt down a road that you wouldn’t normally take. She created a great and noble original character, Mary Lee, that makes you wish there were more people like her in the world. This story takes place from Carlisle's POV and he's that kind of doctor you'd want to have in your small town. From the get go CLM is pulling on your heartstrings. The Cullen’s have located to a small mountain town, in honor of Emmett’s roots this time around. When one day, in walks Mary Lee with her five kids.

“I knew that I was going to like her from the moment I met her. I just didn't realize how much she was going to alter my existence.”

Each child has their special story; this enables you feel where each one of them is coming from. You'll want to hug and squeeze them, and then take them home to love them for all eternity.

CLM captures the atmosphere that surrounds the mountains, putting her own twist to the story, that will open your eyes to an area that is often tainted with distaste and misunderstanding. She gives a very realistic view to the situation and absolution to the problem at hand. So I am pleading with you to go check out this piece of fan fiction.

Now for the nitty gritty M-rating. The fic that Jacky-Cullen brings to us So Far Away is her first M-rated fic. For a first timer this one made me feel it all the way to my bones, which doesn’t happen very often. So I just have to say she did an exceptional job.

Summary/Prompt used: Hitchhiker Bella or Edward. When Bella's truck breaks down, she needs a ride to her father's annual BBQ. Good thing a bronze haired Adonis is headed that way too

Who knew that being broken down and stuck on the side of the road could turn into the best thing that could have happened to you. I certainly didn’t and I soooo wished I was Bella by the end. At first she’s scared thinking he’s a murderer…

“Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God! I'm going to die! The Fast and the Furious wanna be driver is going to kill me and hide my body in the woods or something equally macabre and nobody is going to know what happened to me.”

to thinking…

"How I died," I responded, "I mean the last thing I remember was my truck stopping, and me getting out looking for cell reception, and now you're here to take me to heaven. You are taking me to heaven, right?"

JC flips the coin and we get to hear from Edward as well. You can’t help but feel for the guy either; he started out at a buck twenty-five going into college and is made into our beloved lean, green eyed, bronze-haired Adonis with the help of his friends, and operation GESA. I just want to put it on record that I want to take this Edward home with me too and just keep him all to myself, because you can’t help but fall in love with him.

A little while into the trip, he gets pretty bold and does the best – and potentially the worst – thing ever, but you’ll have to read it to find out. Through this act I believe is how he really won Bella over, because if I was in her situation, I wouldn't be able to resist either.

This fic makes me want to take a ride with my hubward and get down and dirty in the backseat. So go read and leave her some lovin’ too on a job well done. Just do it, read, GO, NOW!

That is all….

OpenHome: Author Recommendation by FanFicAholics Anon Ferla & Silverspoon

When two FanFicAholics read and review two very different stories, then discover as they rave about them, that they have in fact just R&R'd the same Author, they decided to share with all you other FanFicAholics the mutual pleasure they found in OpenHome's Fanfiction.

OpenHome has 6 fics under her belt and if the reviews by Ferla aka Chaz and Silverspoon aka Samantha, are anything to by, then OpenHome should be your next stop for a witty, empathic and real story to read.

If your prerequisite is twilight characters, she has them. 'Who we are left behind' is a Charlie & Sue twilight one shot telling the love story of two humans with immortal children, or try 'Singularity' a Alice & Jasper fic which opens with Alice's awakening from a life she doesn't remember, into a life she has no idea how to live. Sporting 35 chapters, 'Singularity' is a complete fic and even has a sequel 'Coalescence' which follows A&J from their first meeting to their union with the Cullens.

But OpenHome hasn't stopped there, she also has Rosalie & Emmett in an AH fic called 'Resolution'.

Ferla writes:

'Resolution'
By Openhome

Rated: T
Language: English
Characters: Rosalie/ Emmett
Genre: Romance

Resolution:
-a resolve or determination to do something
-the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action
-the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; having a firmness of purpose
-a solution

I couldn't even tell you exactly what made me start reading this fic in the first place. I knew I wanted to read a one shot and I knew I wanted something different. Everything these days majority Edward and Bella. I wanted to shake things up a little, just a little.

I certainly found different with this fic. Not only is it a Rosalie and Emmett story, which is hard to come by in it's own right, but it's also AH. It's a story about Rosalie's questionable love for Emmett. In the beginning the author wrote about how the idea for the story came to life.

'The idea for it came from a discussion on whether or not canon Rosalie truly loved Emmett, or if she simply loved a dream. I thought it was an interesting question because I know many of us who have loved a dream more than reality, and yet we still call it love.'

This truly caught my attention, and I couldn't wait to start reading. Not many fics these days write about real life situations. I mean, it's fiction right? We use it to escape our real lives, whether it be because they are hectic, lonely or just plain boring. Why, in their right mind, would anyone write about a married woman, with a couple of kids, questioning how she could love a man who was obviously at fault for them living in a trailer and her having to work as a check out girl. In the words of Rosalie;

'Rosalie Hale should never have been forced to live on beans and cheese bought with WIC credit.'

Yeah they're doing it tough big time when they're having to ask for hand outs. I know I've certainly felt the pinch as the economy has hit it's highs and lows over the last few years, so I could sympathize with Rosalie.

What happens only moments after that statement from Rosalie, makes her life spin on it's axle. She is forced to think differently. To step outside herself and look in. You ever have an 'aha' moment that shook the very foundation of who you are and how you've lived your life up until that moment? Everything is as it is because of you and not those around you. Those you continue to blame because you would never, under a thousand suns, be the cause for such failure.

As we follow Rosalie on her swim from the bottom of the murky waters, she sifts through all her wrong doings. It's quite enjoyable and heart warming watching her put things in their rightful place. It's the kind of story that gets you thinking about your own life and It's not often that a writer can do that, especially in fanfiction.

The ending to this fic is as real as the beginning. I walked away with nothing but respect for the writer and for her characters. There was not a single 'as if' moment in this fic, which is something that happens to me often. Yes it's fanfiction but I need it to be believable to an extent. However this is the first fic I've read that was real right down to the very consensus that in some places, I could liken it to my own life. For that reason I definitely recommend that you read this story and review!

Keep in mind that this is the writers first AH story and give her some much needed love. While you're there check out her other stories, that we haven't had room to rec' this week.

OpenHome has one more fic in her pocket, based on SM's SciFi novel 'The Host'. OpenHome writes 'Toddler wars'. Now, I've never read a 'Host' fic before but after reading Silverspoons review, it's now on my 'to read' list!

Silverspoon writes:

'Toddler Wars'
By OpenHome
Rated : K+

Language: English
Characters: Wanderer/Lucinda
Genres: Sci-fi/Humour

How do you handle a strong willed toddler when you were never a child? Well Openhome’s tagline had me smiling immediately. As all experienced toddler wranglers know, (short of swimming with sharks sans the safety cage), there is no task in this world more dangerous, terrifying, and yet oddly rewarding. So I decided that the chance to examine how an outwardly perfect alien life would handle the role was an opportunity too great to pass up!

This beautifully penned oneshot is set around five years following the events of Meyer’s acclaimed adult novel ‘The Host’, and sees Wanda now married to the love of her human life- Ian. The couple now have a three year old son named Ryan, whose tantrums and unruly behaviour see a heavily pregnant Wanda driven to the brink of sanity; a feeling so utterly familiar to those who have spent more than ten minutes of their life in the company of a tenacious tot! ‘Toddler Wars’ focuses largely on the relationship between Wanda and her delinquent young son, whilst very effectively dealing with the plethora of confusing emotions that come hand in hand with motherhood. Ill- equipped to deal with the sometimes violent and almost always unreasonable ways of a human child, Wanda turns to the women of their underground community for help in taming the beast. Whilst I must admit that Wanda was perhaps my least favourite character when reading ‘The Host’, I felt that Openhome’s portrayal of the Soul had evolved the character well into a likeable and often flawed woman.

My initial attraction to this oneshot was utterly selfish; I have two toddlers at home and was thereby reeled in by the title. However, I have to admit that I approached the piece with some scepticism at first. Too often on FFN do you find oneshots labelled as ‘humour’ to be sadly lacking, (albeit charming), and yet this piece had me laughing out loud in all the right places. The language used and grammar employed were near flawless, and Openhome succeeded in creating a very convincing representation of the early mother/ child relationship. I particularly enjoyed the perceptiveness of the piece. Openhome often referenced the feelings of overwhelming responsibility that come with childrearing to even the best of human mothers, and so the assumption that Wanda with her gentle ways would find discipline to be her undoing was spot on in my opinion.

Perhaps my favourite moment of the entire oneshot was seeing a tired, hormonal and unwillingly angry Wanda battling to give Ryan a timeout. Any parent/ carer who has ever employed the famous ‘naughty-spot’ method will doubtlessly be smiling already! Without giving away too much and spoiling the piece for future readers, this part of the chapter was simultaneously heart-wrenching and yet very funny. Wanda’s fear of losing her child’s love through her need to discipline was touching and well conveyed, and also utterly true to life. It also seemed a natural progression in the story’s arc to see the other community dwellers come to Wanda’s rescue whilst also regaling her with stories of their own youths. Whilst Wanda is given further insight into the workings of the mind of a human child, the reader observes a beautiful picture of Wanda’s struggle to adjust to life as one of the humans.

Overall, ‘Toddler Wars’ was a well-written, colourful and touching oneshot by an author who evidently prides themselves on presenting only the best to their readers. The conclusion of the oneshot left me giggling, satisfied, and yet wanting more at the same time. The ‘grammar-Nazis’ among us (myself included) will be suitably impressed by the careful attention taken in this piece, while readers who prefer to concentrate on emotional content will also struggle to find this lacking. I thoroughly enjoyed my brief visit to Wanda’s imagined future-world and left this oneshot feeling refreshed, entertained, and above all as though my inner-mummy was wholly amused. Written with understanding, care and wit, this oneshot is too good for any Meyer fans to pass over; and so with this in mind I urge you to ‘go forth- read, review and spread some FFA love’.

One shots

One shots are a fantastic way for an author to clear the mind of small ideas. These short stories tantalise the tastebuds and sometimes they even pave the way for a continuation.

The response to a one shot is just as important to the author as the response to a multi chapter fic, but alas some one shots are either ignored or worse, read but not reviewed.

I would like to take the oppurtunity to rec a few one shots that deserve your attention and your review and I promise, there's something for everyone in here.

Enjoy and don't forget to review and of course, to rec to others.

Entry for "A Very Sexy Un-Birthday" contest: Lost meets Castaway meets Twilight. Forty-four days, eighteen strangers, sun, surf, sand, and Bella's twenty-third birthday. This is what you get. Rated M for mature themes and lemons.

AcrossTheSkyInStars wrote an absolutely beautiful one shot here. In 10,324 words she manages to set the scene, introduce the characters - star players as well as background - and delve into their brief history and reason for being in their current situation. She gives us an occasion, angst, fluff and a drizzle of lemon. I was hooked from the start with the plot reminding me of 'Lost' but with our favourite Twilight characters.

For the Love of Jasper Contest O/S entry. After a whirlwind romance, Edward is left picking up the pieces when Jasper leaves. But when Jasper has a change of heart, he decides to give Edward a call—a call that will change both of their lives forever.

I cried with this one shot and anyone on the FFA group will know I hardly ever cry at fanfiction. The relationship in this fic is surprising and moving and heartbreaking. I can't say too much because that may spoil the beauty of this oneshot.

Yes thats right - I rec'd my own one shot! And I haven't stopped there, I have 2 more to add! Don't judge me, my review count is low, my hits are poor yet I think you may enjoy. Last Request was rec'd by AG on her TLYDF blog and she even made a banner under her 'Wonderfully Weird' category (to view the banner go visit my Spellbound thread on Twilighted) yet it has 11 reviews only. To kill a Cullen - It sounds like blasphemy, especially with the particular Cullen who's murdered in this one shot! It stunned me and New Moon will never be the same again. I thought this one shot could develop into a few more chapters because it left me reeling yet craving more.

Again, to kill a Cullen - I need to wash my mouth out, it hurts to even say it! So, first place winner, it should have hundreds of reviews, right? Wrong! This little gem has only 28. How can this be legal? I was on tenter hooks reading this one, wondering with each turn who would be the Cullen to die. I needed a stiff one afterwards and I'm refering to a drink (for a change). Ok 'Wow' is the only word I can use to describe this. Its rated 'M' for a reason and man oh man, that rating is milked for all its worth! Absolutely un-freakin-believable. Yet it has just 16 reviews?
